LYNX SIGHTED IN PROTECTED AREA AND NATIONAL ECOLOGICAL NETWORK AREA MANAGED BY THE PI “PRIRODA”

In the early evening hours of 14 March 2010, Marinko
Cindrić, ranger of the Public Institution “Priroda”, sighted
a lynx (Lynx lynx) in the National Ecological Network area, which is also
a protected area of Gorski Kotar. This is an important sighting, considering
that the lynx population of Croatia is estimated to be about 30 to 60
remaining individuals. The Lynx is mostly active at night and is very
difficult to see and monitor in the wild because it is a very timid animal.
This finding will be stored in the database on the movements of large
wild animals in the National Ecological Network area of Primorsko-Goranska
County. This sighting represents a small piece in creating a comprehensive
picture of the life of large wild animals. The exact location of the sighting
has intentionally been omitted from this brief report because of the vulnerability
of the area in which it was seen and because of the vulnerability of the
lynx as a species.

Should you have the opportunity to sight a lynx or any
other large wild animal in the Primorsko-Goranska County, please report
the location, date and location of the sighting to the Public Institution
“Priroda”. Your sighting could be of great importance and will
be included in the wild animal database.
