GRIFFON VULTURE NEST MONITORING

Photo 1. A particular nesting feature of the Kvarner griffon vultures is their habit of building nests on cliffs rising directly over the sea. This photo is part of the photographic documentation taken during nest monitoring on 1 April 2017. To make monitoring easier in the coming years, red circles mark the positions of this year’s nests. GRIFFON VULTURE NEST MONITORING

This year’s spring monitoring of griffon vultures included nest counting. On the cliffs of the Kvarner islands of Cres, Plavnik, Prvić and Krk, we found and listed 102 active nests belonging to griffon vultures. Photographs taken of the cliffs with nests will be used to create a database to help monitor, in the years to come, the usage of microhabitats on cliff ledges suitable for nest building. Monitoring was carried out by members of the BIOM Association and a “Priroda” employee.
