NATURE SCIENCE STUDIES OF PONDS ON KRK ISLAND, PART OF PROJECT LOKNA (PROJECT FOR THE CONSERVATION AND PROMOTION OF AQUATIC BIOTOPES – PONDS AND MARSH POOLS – FOR THE FUTURE) In June, Public Institution “Priroda”, in collaboration with external associates, initiated natural science research at three ponds within the territory of the Town of Krk. The studies are conducted as part of Project LOKNA, a European territorial cooperation project, in which PI “Priroda” is the lead partner. Currently underway is research focused on studying the island’s herpetofauna, dragonflies, bats, birds and flora, and on geolocating the ponds on the island. Within the scope of Project LOKNA, PI “Priroda” acquired a multi-parameter water quality meter to facilitate the collection of valuable data concerning the ecological condition of the ponds.
These intriguing studies will provide us with insights into the living world in ponds and around them. Ponds are aquatic oases in an otherwise waterless karst area. Some ponds hold water even during the driest time of the year, so they are vital to the biodiversity of this generally dry region. The ponds themselves are teeming with biodiversity. There we can find the larvae of insects such as dragonflies, water insects, amphibian larvae such as tadpoles, as well as adult amphibians, such as newts, that spend most of their lives in water. Adult dragonflies fly around the ponds, and birds and bats often stop there to drink water or hunt insects that gather near the ponds. Ponds are teeming with life even when temperatures are soaring. In addition to ponds, the areas under research also have many other interesting features such as majestic, old downy oaks (Quercus pubescens). Old trees, like these oaks, are home to numerous animals such as birds, small mammals and bats.
Field research will last until the end of October 2015 and research results will be presented in printed publications and posted on the Project LOKNA Website. The Website will also provide a joint cross-border database of valuable information about the karst ponds of Krk Island and the marsh pools in the Ljubljana Marsh.
