WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

“Forests: Nature at Your Service” is the theme
of this year’s World Environment Day. To celebrate the occasion, a variety
of events were organised at Čikat Forest Park on 2 June 2011 in which
the pupils of “Mario Martinolić” Elementary School and, Iva
Ratković, their biology teacher, participated, together with the Town
of Mali Lošinj, the Mali Lošinj Tourist Board, the Mali Lošinj Fire Department
and the Public Institution “Priroda”.

The educational part of activities, designed for the
elementary school pupils, involved a walk through the attractive parts
of this protected area in the company of a ranger of PI “Priroda”.
The ranger spoke to the children about the values and benefits of the
forest park, the role of Ambroz Haračić in establishing the forest park,
and other exciting topics linked to the park. The pupils were able to
learn a handful of interesting facts about the park’s old pine trees and
the biology of pine trees, and, in general, about the role of Mediterranean
forests and the threat to these forests today. The second part of activities
focused on cleaning up Čikat Forest Park.
