FEMALE GOSHAWK SET FREE FOLLOWING RECOVERY AT THE ŠIBENIK FALCON CENTRE

Probably while chasing prey, a young female goshawk (Accipiter
gentilis) was injured after hitting a window of a residential building
at Tihovac in the town of Rijeka. The incident was reported to the Public
Institution Priroda. After inspecting and treating the disabled bird,
Andrej Radalj, an external associate of Priroda, and Marko Modrić, ranger
1st class, decided it was necessary to send it to the Šibenik Falcon Centre.
An authorized institution of the Ministry of Environmental and Nature
Protection, the Dubrava Falcon Centre at Šibenik is engaged in treating
and keeping protected bird species (http://sokolarskicentar.com),
and this is where sick or injured protected birds should be sent for treatment
and recovery. The Centre’s experts established that the bird was suffering
a concussion caused by the force of its collision with the glass window.
The young goshawk was kept at the Centre for a week to recover and was
then returned to Rijeka. On 24 July 2012 it was released in the Martinšćica
region of Rijeka. The goshawk was ringed with ring number TA30401.
