LOKVARKA CAVE OPEN TO VISITORS
The Lokvarka Cave was open once again to visitors on
23 July 2009 after renovation. According to present knowledge, the cave
extends to a depth of 277 metres beneath the ground (this being the difference
in altitude between the cave’s entrance and its bottom), while the total
length of its canals amounts to 1,179 metres! The cave’s first four galleries,
reaching a depth of 75 metres, are electrified and accessible to the public.
This is still the greatest depth accessible to the public in any cave
in Croatia. The cave’s deeper horizons, although much more spectacular,
are accessible only to speleologists. The Lokvarka Cave abounds in cave
formations – stalagmites and stalactites – and other interesting geological
phenomena, and it is rich is cave-dwelling species. Since 1961, the cave
has been protected as a geomorphological monument of nature. Being the
habitat of endemic cave-dwelling animals, it has been classified in the
National Ecological Network under code HR 2000671, and it is managed by
the Public Institution “Priroda”. The cave has a constant temperature
of 80 C, with relative humidity close to saturation. This makes it necessary
to wear the appropriate clothes and footwear when visiting the cave, which
can be visited daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about
visits to the cave, please contact the Lokve Tourist Board (phone + 385
51 831 250) or the Public Institution “Priroda”.
