FIELD WORKSHOP AND BEACH CLEANING OPERATION ON SV. MARKO ISLAND, A PART OF THE NATIONAL ECOLOGICAL NETWORK
The Young Guardians of the Environment were transferred
by boat and then by dingy to the south-western shore of Sv. Marko Island.
This is the location of an attractive pebble beach on which a considerable
amount of garbage had accumulated over the winter and spring. Before the
beginning of the cleaning operation, the Young Guardians received brief
lectures on how a sudden marine pollution event is reported and handled,
how nature protection in the Primorsko-Goranska County operates, and about
the work of the Public Institution Priroda. Printed materials regarding
nature protection issues were also handed out to the children.
The cleaning operation passed in a pleasant atmosphere
on the beautiful rocky marine landscape of Sv. Marko Island. Because of
its special natural values, the island has been classified in the National
Ecological Network under code HR 2000889. As many as 21 large bags of
garbage were collected and removed from the beach.
Fifteen children – members of the Eco Centre Young Guardians
of the Environment from the elementary schools Zamet, Sv. Matej-Viškovo,
San Nicolo, Brajda and Kozala – and seven mentors of the Young Guardians
participated in the field workshop and beach cleaning operation on Sv.
Marko Island. We would like to thank them all for their efforts and high
spirits in the field workshop, and we also wish to thank the members of
the County Information Centre for their great job in organising and providing
logistic support to the operation.
