INFORMATION PANELS PLACED ON THE PATH LEADING TO THE ORNITHOLOGICAL RESERVE ON THE ISLAND OF KRK

On 14 October 2008, as part of its Marking Protected
Areas program, the Public Institution Priroda set up two panels – one,
an information panel and the other, an instructive panel – along the walking
trail leading to the Diviška Pond and to the Special Ornithological Reserve
Kuntrep (Cape Glavina – Mala Luka). The panels are located in the following
places:

  • The information panel – at the end of the pine forest on the “Lunar
Plateau”, by the small cottage/shelter, not far from the signpost
    on the existing tourist trail.
  • The instructive panel – alongside the dry-stone wall at the stop where
a hiking trail approaches the dry-stone wall near the Diviška Pond.

Measuring 100 x 70 cm, the information panel is set at
eye height on two wooden posts. The instructive panel, measuring 60 x
80 cm, is also placed on wooden posts but is closer to the ground (shorter
posts). It has been set at a slight angle, leeward of the dry-stone wall
(because this location is highly exposed to the bora wind and to prevent
the panel from being incongruous with the landscape).

Because we wanted to place the panels in a landscape
with dry-stone walls where shepherds go about their daily activities,
we deemed it advisable to inform the local community and all interested
parties of our intentions, and were pleased to receive their positive
opinion. We judge that these panels will not disrupt the regular activities
of shepherds or other traditional users of this area. Also, we estimate
that the panels will have no vital impact on an increase in visitor/tourist
numbers that could possibly jeopardise the birds in the Special Reserve.
The panel will, however, provide tourists with basic information on this
area and on the code of conduct. The contents of the panels can be viewed
on the Priroda Web pages in the section “Marking Protected Areas”.
